![]() Of course, you could probably find a specialty font which includes an R breve character, which you could download into your Mac's font stock, but this is probably overkill unless you need a genuine R breve frequently. Since a caron and a breve look almost identical, I suspect the R caron will be satisfactory for your use. This gives you all the available Latin letters, including R caron. The best way to access this is to use Apple's Character Palette via the Mellel Edit Menu, last item "Special Characters" and chose the Category part, go down to European Scripts, and from them choose Latin. R with a breve above it is not in any of the thousand odd fonts I have installed on my computer, but R with a caron above it is a standard Unicode symbol. (For instance, in Helvetica or Times New Roman whereas in Minion Pro or ordinaryTimes the line comes a bit too low to look good.) Depending on what font you are using, the R and the macron above it will look quite good. Type your R, highlight it, and in the Character Appearance palette, in the Line options choose Overline. R with a straight line (macron) above it is easily produced with the Character Appearance palette in Mellel. I hope an expert comes along and explains all this. (The closest I can find is r with a caron (upsidedown circumflex: 0159). ![]() Both Mellel and Text Edit seem incapable of putting a breve above a consonant, presumably because there is (apparently) no Unicode codepoint at all for that. The security content of iOS 17.2.1if anyremains a mystery, with no published CVE entries at the time. Mellel compounds the problem by putting the macron well to the left of where it should be. Apple has issued iOS 17.2.1, a surprise new iPhone update containing important bug fixes. For reasons I don't fully understand (but I think it is because there is no Unicode code point for macron r) macron + r produces an r with a macron above and a dot below in Mellel and in TextEdit (Unicode 1E5D). The Adobe Pro OpenType fonts work well in Mellel for most things, but fall down here. I have had a look just now, but can't find one that gets macrons and breves right with 'r'. The hard part: you need a font that will display the combination properly in Mellel. The macron is on Option-a the breve is on Option-b (logically enough). The macron (horizontal overline diacritic) and the breve (the curly one) on this keyboard layout are accessed via dead keys: you type the accent first, then the character you want to combine it with. (You need to enable it in System Preferences>International>Input, then select it from the dropdown menu on the menu bar). You can get the ones you want with the US extended keyboard layout. The easy part (perhaps you know this bit, but just in case): you need to find a way of inputting the character.
